How Nevada's Tax-Free Zone Could Pay Dividends For The A’s

During this time of year, I usually think about how to cut down on my yearly tax bill; after all, taxes will be the largest expense throughout my lifetime. This led me to think about why the Oakland A’s trading their green and gold for the neon lights of Las Vegas might actually be a savvy play. I’m talking about the kind of move that makes Moneyball look like child’s play. We’re not just chatting about a change of scenery; we’re talking about a financial game-changer for the players.

Imagine you’re a big-league player, and you’ve got skills that make scouts swoon. You’re in the market for a new contract, and the figures thrown your way are enough to make your head spin faster than a curveball. Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Let’s say you’re eyeing a cool $10 million a year. With California’s top state income tax rate hovering around 13.3% in Oakland, you’re kissing goodbye to roughly $1.33 million of your hard-earned cash. Ouch, right?

But wait, let’s flip the script. You take that same contract in Las Vegas, and guess what? Nevada’s state income tax is a big, fat zero. We’re talking about a difference that could buy you a mansion, a fleet of luxury cars, or enough ballpark hot dogs to feed a small country.

You might be wondering why these athletes would choose the no-state-income-tax route. Well, it’s simple – athletes have a limited time to make their millions. Every dollar saved is a dollar earned, and in a career that can be as short as a few seasons, these savings aren’t just nice; they’re essential.

So, is being in one of these no-income-tax states like having a cheat code in the game of financial planning? It sure seems like it. In the world of sports, where every advantage counts, this is like finding an extra life or a secret power-up. It’s a financial boost that can make a significant difference in a player’s life, both during their career and after they hang up their cleats.

As the A’s gear up for their Vegas debut, we can’t help but wonder: Will this move prove to be a masterstroke in attracting top talent? Will other teams in high-tax states start feeling the heat? Only time will tell.

Vegas, baby, Vegas – where the stakes are high, the lights are bright, and the paychecks are much heftier.

🧠 Trivia Question:

Brandon Crawford's 37th birthday is this Sunday. How many Gold Gloves has this 2x World Series Champion won over his 13-year career?

Use Rakuten When Shopping Online

Over the last 12 months, I’ve been able to earn over $210 in additional Cash Back just by installing the Rakuten extension or going through their site when shopping online at stores like Walmart and Fanatics. This has been paid to me mostly in AMEX points (my choice because I can get more than $210 worth of value that way), but the $11.92 you see above was initially paid directly via PayPal.

Rakuten has paid me over $50 per quarter over the last year in Cash Back for purchases I was already going to make. I didn’t use this prior to the beginning of last year and left a lot of money on the table, so I wanted to share it while we were on the topic of savings today.

If you haven’t signed up previously, right now, they’ll give you $30 after you sign up and make your first purchase. Transparently, I’ll receive $30 as well if you use that referral link, but I would recommend you sign up and use it whether you go through that link or not. Receive your funds either by PayPal or AMEX Points. I earned a free hotel night in the last year via AMEX Points just by making sure the Chrome extension was active when shopping online.

Is there a better way to honor Brandon Crawford than by watching him hit a home run off his own brother-in-law, Gerrit Cole? It's a family affair, and we're all invited to the party. Just imagine how great Crawford must feel after smashing this tater.
