Ichiro Suzuki Leads the Charge to Cooperstown, While Second-Base Drama and Pitcher Showdowns Add Spice to the Ballot
In about a year's time, the legendary Ichiro Suzuki is set to join the baseball immortals in the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. This guy isn't just tiptoeing past the 75% vote requirement – he's sprinting passed it, and might even rub elbows with the likes of Mariano Rivera and Derek Jeter in the "nearly unanimous" club. And while this year's ballot is shining bright with Adrián Beltré, 2025's looking just as spicy with Ichiro headlining and a bunch of other hotshots stirring up the pot.
Now, let's talk second-base drama. Is Chase Utley Hall of Fame material? This question is turning up the heat for Dustin Pedroia and Ian Kinsler, both first-timers on the ballot. If you're a fan of the Jaffe WAR Score System (JAWS), you know it's like the baseball geek's magic mirror for Hall of Fame worthiness. While Utley's just grazing the average JAWS score for enshrined second basemen, neither Pedroia nor Kinsler quite hit that mark. But hey, these guys are more than just numbers – think championship rings, All-Star appearances, and some serious defensive swagger.
Speaking of comparisons, CC Sabathia's Hall of Fame case is getting eyeballed against Andy Pettitte and Mark Buehrle, who are still waiting for their call to the hall. Sabathia's got a resume to boast about – Cy Young Award, World Series glory, and over 3,000 strikeouts. But then there's King Félix Hernández, whose Cy Young win in 2010 shook up the game, proving that it's not all about the Ws. His lower win total does make his case a bit trickier, though. With starting pitchers' roles evolving, it's a wild ride figuring out who makes the cut for the Hall.
Finally, let's tip our caps to the underdogs that will fight to stay above the 5% vote mark – Troy Tulowitzki, Ben Zobrist, Curtis Granderson, Hanley Ramírez, and Russell Martin. These guys are up against a tough rule that's knocked out some big names in the past. And let's not forget the players who are even bigger long shots for the Hall but still deserve a shoutout for their outstanding careers – like Adam Jones, Brian McCann, and the rest of this year's potential nominees. It's always cool to remember the greats, even if their Cooperstown chances are slim.

Happy early 29th birthday to Bryan Reynolds (January 27th). Reynolds can be a monster, which we saw in 2021 when he had a .302 Batting Average with a .912 OPS, and led the NL in Triples. With the Pirates tied to Reynolds through 2030, they’re sure hoping he can get back to peak form as well.
